Ms. Parsons" sixth grade math classes had a wonderful time on Monday, May the 21st, presenting their end of the year projects to Mrs. Lock"s preschool class. The sixth graders had spent the last few weeks of school wrapping up their studies on Geometry and Statistical Data. The students covered 2 and 3 dimensional figures, composite figures, area, surface area and volume of prisms during their Geometry unit. They also covered data collection using central tendency and distribution of data through graphing. Once the objectives and standards had been discussed and used the students were given a proposal from Ms. P to create a geometric toy that could be used and given to the preschool class. The project was comprised of a list of requirements and specifications using the objectives and standards. The students then had to build the geometric toy using their mathematical concepts. They then had to construct a wooden object and learn how to use tools from the high school shop teacher and Ms. P to complete the process. The students did an amazing job at constructing the objects and the project was a huge success when they presented the toys to the preschoolers. The sixth graders and Ms. Parsons would like to thank Mr. Kurtz, Mrs. Rotterman, Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. Woodside and Mr. Mefford for all their help and supervision with the project; we could not have done it without all of you!!!
